SouthSouthNorth (SSN) believes that programmes involving partnerships with both the developed and the developing world can bring about lasting and effective change within societies. We are currently engaged in programmes in both Africa and Latin America that look at providing an alternative to the business-as-usual development path associated with high greenhouse gas emissions. Further information on our current programmes can be found below. Information on past programmes and projects can be found on our resources page.

Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF)

CRIDF is a DFID (UK Aid) supported programme working to provide long-term solutions to water infrastructure issues that affect the lives of the vulnerable and poor in Southern Africa. Addressing such issues is of particular importance in the face of climate change.

Southern Africa Climate Finance Partnership

The Southern Africa Climate Finance Partnership (SACFP) involves the development of a regional partnership to improve country-owned climate finance portfolios. These portfolios should be able to access the GCF and other climate finance avenues, and mobilise private investment where possible. During Phase 1 (July 2016 to March 2017) support was provided to Namibia, Zambia and South Africa to engage and test the Partnership model as an approach to undertaking this sequencing exercise. The United Kingdom’s Department of International Development provided funding for Phase 1 of the SACFP administered via the Southern Africa Trust under the South African Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation. A proposed Phase 2 (April 2017 onwards) will establish a four-year partnership involving collaborative country programming to sequence ambitious climate finance action in a number of African countries. As yet, Phase 2 does not have a funder or any resources committed to it.

Africa LEDS Partnership (AfLP)

The Africa LEDS Partnership (AfLP)  is working towards a prosperous, climate-resilient Africa, with inclusive green growth, for the welfare of current and future generations. It aims to promote low-carbon, climate-resilient development to support poverty alleviation, job creation and environmental management in Africa.

Small Grants Facility

The Small Grants Facility provides finance to communities with the aim of reducing their vulnerability and increasing their resilience to climate variability and change.

Future Climate for Africa (FCFA)

Future Climate for Africa (FCFA), is a new five-year international research programme jointly funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The Programme will support research to better understand climate variability and change across sub-Saharan Africa. FCFA is a new SouthSouthNorth Programme, affiliated to CDKN.

Compiling South Africa’s Market Readiness Proposal for a carbon tax

The World Bank’s Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) is a grant based, capacity-building trust fund that provides funding and technical assistance to enhance readiness for market-based instruments that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The PMR brings together developed and developing countries, as well as other key experts and stakeholders in providing a platform for technical discussions on market instruments, south-south exchange, collective innovation for pilot efforts, and the scale up of financial flows.
