Unprecedented construction and an economic boom, together with the rapid increase in the city’s population, has impacted the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority’s (AAWSA) ability to meet the demands placed upon it. To address this significant gap, the government identified improved water resource management as a priority. As a result, the City of Addis Ababa has requested and received technical and financial support from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Resilient Cities Network (RCN) to undertake relevant assessments.
The Addis Water Fund Feasibility Project ran from September 2020 to March 2021 and developed a feasibility study on establishing a water fund. The study evaluated the technical, institutional, political, economic, and financial sustainability of creating a Water Fund for Addis Ababa. This will help the City decide whether it is feasible to continue investing in preparing for and designing a Water Fund, including whether there is sufficient technical understanding, political commitment, institutional capacity and financial resources to implement it.
