Artificial Intelligence: A Game Changer for Africa’s Just Energy Transition?

Africa is at a crossroads. With a rapidly growing population and increasing energy demand, the continent faces the dual challenge of providing reliable electricity while ensuring environmental sustainability and social equity. The concept of a Just Energy Transition (JET) is key to navigating this path—ensuring that the transition to renewable energy benefits all people, especially marginalised communities. But how can Africa accelerate this transition while leaving no one behind?

One answer lies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) — a powerful tool that could reshape Africa’s energy future. From optimising energy distribution to integrating renewable energy sources into existing grids, AI has the potential to drive both efficiency and inclusivity. As AI technologies evolve, they can help address the continent’s energy challenges, improve access to clean energy, and support the creation of new jobs in the renewable energy sector.

In countries like South Africa, AI-powered smart meters are already helping vulnerable households manage electricity use, preventing disconnections, and ensuring continued access to energy. Meanwhile, in Kenya, AI algorithms are being used to forecast solar and wind energy generation, making integrating these variable energy sources into the grid easier. These examples show just a glimpse of how AI can help advance a Just Energy Transition in Africa—one that balances environmental goals with social and economic equity.

But the path forward is not without challenges. Africa’s energy sector struggles with data gaps, regulatory hurdles, and a shortage of skilled workers in AI and data science. To truly harness the power of AI, it is crucial to focus on affordability, local expertise, and community involvement. Solutions must be tailored to African communities’ specific needs and realities, and local talent must be nurtured to ensure long-term sustainability.

In this opinion piece authored by Tamuka Chekero and Noëleen Murray for the Operationalising a Just Transition in Africa (OJTA) programme, we dive deeper into how AI can be a game-changer for Africa’s Just Energy Transition, exploring real-world examples, best practices, and the challenges that lie ahead.
