Establishing Access to Sustainable Cold Chains in Ethiopia (EASCC-Ethiopia)
Seeking to establish access to sustainable cooling in Ethiopia, this project focuses on demonstrating the technical and economic viability of climate-friendly and energy-efficient cooling technologies along prioritized value chains. The project will develop methodological tools for calculating climate and sustainable development benefits of improved access to sustainable cooling while emphasizing transparency and environmental integrity. With the intent to mobilize climate finance and raise ambition, the project’s results will be integrated into Ethiopia’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
The key outcomes are twofold:
-
- Establish access to sustainable cooling throughout high-impact cold chains across priority sectors in Ethiopia. This will be achieved through a combination of strengthening the enabling environment, selecting catalytic demonstration projects and mobilizing finance.
- Enhance awareness, capacities and requisite Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and climate finance methodologies to use these technologies among government institutions and the private sector. By expanding access to suitable infrastructure and strengthening local management capacities, environmental, economic and social gains can be achieved.
