The Green Accountability Platform

SSN in collaboration with World Resources Institute and the Huairou Commission, is implementing The Green Accountability Platform, which seek to strengthen civil society actors’ capacity, including vulnerable communities, to participate in and influence climate policy through social accountability for climate action. The Platform provides grants, tools, and shared learning and support coalition building for CSOs working at the grassroots and national levels. It also connects with national and global networks working to strengthen climate governance and support green accountability. Specifically, the project aims to:

  • Provide strategic finance to 25 CSOs in Bangladesh, Cameroon, Senegal, Brazil and Mexico to make climate finance governance for climate change more transparent, participatory and accountable.
  • Improve the impact and equity of climate finance in the target countries by supporting the integration of community citizen and CSO feedback into climate finance decision making.
  • Encourage collaboration with relevant governmental institutions to influence, implement and monitor climate finance processes and decisions.
  • Establish a Green Accountability Online Platform that will gather knowledge products and research actions supported by the Project. These products will comprise of blogs, podcasts, and recorded webinars.
  • Support grassroots voices through convening of a grassroots academy for sharing practices that advance: accountability of governments, financing institutions, intermediaries, or their own organizations; and grassroots women’s participation in decision-making, implementation and monitoring of climate policies and finance.
  • Establish a Community of Practice and Green Accountability Innovation Network to foster an ecosystem that supports green accountability and contributes to creating a global knowledge and innovation hub for green accountability.

Through this Platform, SSN is coordinating the Green Accountability Community of Practice over a 12-month period from October 2024 to October 2025 which supports three Affinity Groups focusing on key thematic areas within the green accountability space to offer a space for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and co-creation based on topics that align with grantees’ projects. The three affinity groups are:

  • Enabling greater transparency through data/ information mechanisms and processes for civil society.
  • Enhancing advocacy and engagement channels for inclusive policy processes.
  • Bolstering accountability through increased awareness raising and enhanced capacities related to climate finance.

Through financial and technical support and convening a Community of Practice, the capacities of CSOs and grassroots leaders working on green accountability will be strengthened, leading to more transparent, inclusive and accountable climate policies.

Governments will also be incentivized to include civil society in policymaking, climate finance processes, and implementation.

The Global Partnership for Social Accountability (GPSA), the predecessor to The Civil Society and Social Innovation Alliance (CIVIC), hosted by the World Bank Trust provided funds for the Green Accountability Platform to strengthen civil society actors’ capacity, including vulnerable communities, to participate in and influence climate policy through social accountability for climate action.
